Great News!

Ecstasy's visit to Patricia's Green in San Francisco has been extended until December 31, 2010!

Thank you to the community members and local businesses of Hayes Valley, and to the Hayes Valley Arts Coalition for rallying support and advocating for an extension of Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito's sculpture Ecstasy. By popular demand, Ecstasy will remain installed until December 31, 2010, instead of deinstalling this month, as previously planned.

Hayes Valley Welcomes Ecstasy!

In February, during the installation of Ecstasy, we stopped by to say Hi, sans camera, to Karen Cusolito and her crew who were doing the installation. Feeling foolish, on my job and my joy with no way to take photos who do I run into but a woman on a bike with a gorgeous camera, who of course goes to Burning Man and knows Dan and Karen's work. So I introduced myself and Kristin said she would be happy to get a few shots of the installation, and try to include one of Karen and her crew. So here are the photos, just in time for a final reminder of the "Opening Reception" this Friday:

March 19, 2010
Patricia’s Green
at Octavia and Hayes Streets
San Francisco, CA
4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We will have music, IGBA MMOH African Drummers and Gaucho Gypsy Jazz, and celebrate together!

The neighborhood continues to welcome Ecstasy. Besides all the great photos on flickr, they're blogging about Ecstasy out there! How fun is that? Clearly the neighborhood loves her, and it looks to me like she is loving them back. So if you want to read how San Francisco and especially Hayes Valley is falling in love with Ecstasy, read these!

Happy Rusty Friday

Thanks aziari.

Valentine's Day Ecstasy on Patricia's Green

Read what my favorite blogger, Civic Center, fabulous photographer and Hayes Valley Neighborhood pundit had to say about Ecstasy on Valentine's Day. I especially loved that he mentioned that David Best's Temple on Patricia's Green was his first blog post, so check out Valentine's Day Ecstasy on Patricia's Green, there are other great photos like this one and a local take on the neighborhood.

Thanks Mike....

Installing "Ecstasy"

Crimson said "The head of the sculpture is wrapped in a bag to keep the chains from tangling. When the bag was removed the people watching the install cheered."

We stopped by to see the artists installing Ecstasy at Patricia's Green. Crimson Rose, Board Member of the Black Rock Arts Foundation and Michael Mac Millan, one of the Hayes Valley neighbors were there taking photos that we wanted to share with you. We are pretty excited to see this amazing sculpture come to San Francisco.

"Ecstasy" by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is proud to support the installation of Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito's sculpture Ecstasy at Patricia’s Green in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. This hopeful, figurative work will be on display, free to the public, from February 7, 2010 till June 18, 2010.

First displayed at the Burning Man festival in Nevada in 2008, Ecstasy is one of the eight monumental metal figures of the artists’ masterpiece, Crude Awakening. In Crude Awakening, these eight figures surrounded a 99-foot tall wooden oil derrick in gestures of prostration, worship and exaltation. Alone, Ecstasy embarks on a hopeful journey. Instead of throwing her head back in reverie to the oil derrick, she gazes wistfully into the open sky as she steps forward into an optimistic future, free of dependency on fossil fuel.

Through our Civic Arts Program, BRAF is pleased to further the evolution of this artwork’s message by exposing it to a new audience and community, and to return to the site of Patricia’s Green. In 2005, this location became the site of BRAF’s first public art project.

Working closely with the residents and business owners of the Hayes Valley neighborhood, BRAF established a model of community collaboration towards the curation and installation of public art. These community members continued to work on bringing art into their neighborhood, forming the Hayes Valley Art Coalition. The installation of Ecstasy at Patricia’s Green further affirms the success of this collaboration, and of the model of public, temporary art installation.

"Das Mann of Steel" in the News

I am sure you remember Passage, by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito, which inhabited Pier 14 as the first piece of temporary art in that space, as part of BRAF's Civic Arts Program.

Dan, one of the sculptors is featured in the East Bay Express, check it out, Das Mann of Steel.

Congratulations Dan, it is always great to see art featured in the news!

Be sure and read Dan's response to the article, in the comments section of the article, in which he credits his co-sculptor Karen Cusolito.

Hasta Luego "Passage"

"Passage", mother and child sculptures by artists Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito, have been gracing Pier 14 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco for 18 months. Passage created a lot of controversy. San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom once said “Short-term public art projects can invigorate our public spaces with artworks that may be bolder, provocative and more topical than the permanent projects and…will allow the public to see their city and their surroundings in a new way”.

So now it is time for the next temporary sculpture to inhabit this space.
