Come visit us on the Playa at The Culture Labs!
Each year, the Black Rock Arts Foundation returns to our source of inspiration, to that city where interactive art is everywhere you look: Black Rock City. We eagerly look forward to our stay on the playa as an opportunity to connect with our supporters, to inspire others to instigate interactive artworks in their hometown and to educate about our mission and our projects.
Last year, we joined forces with our sister outreach organizations, Burners Without Borders, Black Rock Solar and the Burning Man Regional Network to create ‘Everywhere Lane’, illustrating and educating the notion that the burner ethos is everywhere! This year, we and these outreach groups bring you The Culture Labs!
The Culture Labs will be housed under one large pavilion (which might look familiar… it’s one of the pavilions that surrounded the man in 2007 and 2008!) Under this large, inclusive structure we’ll host interactive activities, events and gatherings where, together, we’ll create our ‘culture’ to be carried into the default world.
BRAF will be spearheading two fun elements of the Culture Labs, so stop by to say hello, we would love to have you participate or rest awhile and hang out with us in Black Rock City.
We will be having cocktails on Thursday from 4-6 so stop and have a drink, meet some of the artists and other BRAF members.
You can find us at:

SEE YOU THERE!

Electricity
Joe Olivier, our host for the evening, and new Black Rock Arts Foundation Board of Directors Member and Jessie Deeter the Producer of "Who Killed the Electric Car" and "Revenge of the Electric Car"
Trademark Gunderson founder of the band The Evolution Control Committee, jamming on the VidiMasher 3000, which is a rear-projected, infra-red, fake touch screen -- hacked from Nintendo Wii controllers. It might just be the ultimate mashup musical instrument.
Robert Marcial's presentation about energy in the Bay Area, how it compares locally, nationally and globally
Pacific Energy Center Director, Robert A. Marcial
Robert Silverman playing the Theremin
Alan Rory, PHD of Raygun Gothic Rocketship http://www.almostscientific.com/blog/ Actiongrl and her BFF, Mike Wilson, BRAF Advisory Board Member. Mike was visiting from Austin and it was great that he was able to join us for the evening
Advisory Board Member, Loren Carpenter's Tesla Roadster, Electric Car #187 and Jessie Deeter's Car #173 on display
On our way to the afterparty, affinity, JennyBird, Robert Silverman, Tim Larson and John Mosbough
The Pacific Energy Center was a perfect venue for an evening about electricity, thanks to the PEC and to Joe Olivier for making it happen
A feast, graciously provided by our host, Joe Olivier, thanks Joe
MonkeyBoy checking out the coolant display
A lively crowd soaked up the atmosphere at BRAF's latest Elemental Interactions - and made some donations while they were at it. The presentations more than lived up to the high standards set by previous events in this series, and have us eagerly anticipating the next Elemental Interaction - tentatively planned for October.

BRAF ON THE PLAYA - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION!
Exquisite Corpse
Amoeba Pillows
The Black Rock Arts Foundation supports interactive art projects in off-playa communities, worldwide and year round. Though the focus of our work is off the playa, each year we return to our source of inspiration, to that city where interactive art is everywhere you look: Black Rock City.
We eagerly look forward to our stay on the playa as an opportunity to connect with our supporters, to inspire others to instigate interactive artworks in their hometown and to educate about our mission and our projects.
On-playa, we host an art-making activity that bridges the gap between those who are able to visit BRC, and those who cannot. This year we embrace Burning Man's theme, Evolution, bringing into play a fun side note in art history: the game of Exquisite Corpse. Exquisite Corpse is best known as a collaborative drawing game invented by the Surrealists.
Whether or not you can make it to BRC this year, we invite you to play Exquisite Corpse by mail... and get a drawing mailed back to you, postmarked BRC! To read more about how to play and participate, visit

... or stop in on the playa and play a game!

In addition, we are making pillows for our camp. Get Involved! YOU are the artist! We're looking to you, our extended, international community of Burners and Non-burners alike, to help us create pillows for our Petri Dish on the Playa and and to submit them to the project via mail. See below for guidelines and instructions.
Guidelines and Instructions:
1. Pillows can be 8 inches to 1 or 1 1/2 feet. A little larger or smaller is fine.
1. Pillows can be 8 inches to 1 or 1 1/2 feet. A little larger or smaller is fine.
2. We encourage you to use reclaimed and reused fabric. Look around... any old items of clothing you can cut up? Any left over fabric from past projects you can use? Make it a goal to not buy any materials and you'll be surprised of the creative solutions you come up with!
3. We are trying to make the pillows resemble amoebas, in their many forms.
4. Avoid using any sparkly or fuzzy fabrics that may shed or applique items that may fall off.

Pillows will be accepted on the playa, but we prefer to have as many as possible before then. Please mail them if you can! Mail in deadline is August 17, 2008.
THANKS FOR PARTICIPATING!
