Exhibition of artwork by Android Jones to benefit BRAF!

Blowfish Sushi is proud to present an exhibition of the digital art of Android Jones. You'll remember Jones' work from BRAF's 2008 Artumnal Gathering flyer - a stunning image!

This is the second in a series of exhibits of 2D work by Burning Man regulars, curated by LadyBee. 20% of the profits will be donated to the Black Rock Arts Foundation. Thanks Blowfish and Android Jones!

Android Jones - Opening Reception
Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 6:00-9:00 PM
Blowfish Sushi
2170 Bryant St
San Francisco, CA.

Android Jones is at the forefront of the visionary art movement, a wave of artists who emphasize creativity as the foundation of consciousness and an agent of social change. As a digital alchemist, Android builds on the technical developments of past centuries in art history while pushing the boundaries of the imagination with new technology and media forms. Moving beyond pencils, ink, and brushes, Android develops latent possibilities within software programs such as Painter, Photoshop, ZBrush, and Alchemy, discovering new combinations and uses for tools that exceed the original intentions of their programmers.

In Android's live art performances, including the acclaimed Phadroid dance performances with wife Phaedra Ana, he incorporates elements of chance and improvisation, inviting synchronicities that additionally exceed the individual artist's intentions and allow for unscripted moments of beauty to shine through. As an experience designer, Android has contributed to films, games, and to building communities through www.conceptart.org and www.dreamcatcher.net, and his interactive installations have enchanted tens of thousands of participants at events like Boom and Burning Man.

Viewing the digital domain as a medium of energy and light capable of expanding the nature of reality, Android's art encourages others to explore the potential interfaces of mind and machine in this time of accelerating change and increasing novelty. To this end, Android's art serves two related functions: it bears witness to realities accessible through heightened states of consciousness, and it also engenders heightened awareness through the processes of creation and audience interaction. Digital art becomes a tool for navigating reality and human awareness, and Android's art invites others to join the advancing evolution of consciousness by speaking to the artist in everyone. www.androidjones.com

About the Project

First exhibited at Burning Man in 2010, Future’s Past is an ornate metal sculpture standing 24 feet tall, and tells a story of civilization being reclaimed by nature. The 12-foot base of the piece harkens an ancient pyramid. Springing from its top is an ornate 12-foot Bodhi tree, a symbol of freedom from earthly attachments. At night, eerie green light shines through the finely cut, circuit board-like patterns in the base’s walls.

About the Site

With references to both the future and the past, to both decay and renewal, Future's Past is conceptually an ideal fit for the reclaimed urban space of Patricia's Green in Hayes Valley, a public park where many residents and visitors find pause from their busy lives.

BRAF and HVAC have worked together to curate meaningful, relevant artworks for the Hayes Valley community. This will be HVAC’s seventh art installation. HVAC and BRAF share the belief that art can inspire lasting, meaningful connections between people. This site has become a case study for how art can build community and foster a vibrant civic landscape.

We hope you can join us at the Reception!

In The Music Box, New Orleans Residents Hear Hope

We are so pleased that NPR's "All Things Considered" has published a piece about one of our 2010 grant recipients, the Music Box. The Music Box is an interactive environment built from the remains of an 18th century derelict cottage in New Orleans. This imaginatively reconstructed, and ultimately livable “house”, has become a musical instrument to be played by visitors. Instrumentation will range from the rudimentary banging of wooden boards to more elaborate sounds mechanically triggered by opening doors or pulling levers. In addition to visitors, a range of local and national musicians, including a regional high school marching band, have been invited to play the house for the project’s Block Party series, which are free and open to all.

THE PAINTINGS OF LEE HARVEY ROSWELL

Blowfish Sushi is pleased to announce the first in a series of ongoing art exhibits curated by Christine Kristen aka LadyBee: Paintings by Lee Harvey Roswell. The opening will take place on Wednesday, February 15 from 6-9 at the restaurant, 2170 Bryant Street, San Francisco. 20% of the profits from this exhibit will be donated to the Black Rock Arts Foundation.

RSVP HERE

Lee Harvey Roswell is a self-taught artist from Freefall, New York, whose work is noted for its blend of angst and humor. Themes of death and entropy, tribulation and futility run amok in his distinctly surreal, sometimes slapstick, sometimes nightmarish world. The result is at once mocking and melancholic.

Lee draws his imagery from the rich sources of vaudeville, silent films, circus and mythology, and blends them in idiosyncratic, often autobiographical situations. He is not bound by conventional space; his characters wander through a skewed world where reality and fantasy collide.

In Lee’s words: “I'm interested in exactly this: creating narratives involving the fantastic images there to be culled forth from those fertile depths of the creative, neurotic-like mind. Concrete objects in mad motion, reflecting all the seductive, terrifying elements of existence. The inarguable forerunner of the senses is the eye. We are primarily an optically reliant species. So, as pictorial illusionists transforming nothing into artifacts of spiritual sustenance, I'm holding the potential painter up, not just as an admirable tradesman, but much, much more. He resides as a high-priest over that all-devouring human reality, a conducting channel through which nothing triumphantly becomes something.”

Lee now lives in San Francisco, and his work is shown, collected and published internationally.

Introducing the Bay Lights Project

Artist's Rendering

We at the Black Rock Arts Foundation would like to tell you about a new, exciting project that's in the works, spearheaded by our very own Advisory Board Member Leo Villareal.

Greatly influenced by his first experiences at Burning Man, back in 1994, Leo has created an impressive body of work of large scale, immersive light sculptures. He continues to dazzle us (literally!) with his groundbreaking use of L.E.D. sequencing technology and pioneering methods of using light as an expressive medium. Check out his past projects. Be ready to be wowed!

Leo impresses us with each of his new endeavors, but this one is sure to outshine (literally!) all the others. We'd like to introduce you to his newest proposal: The Bay Lights.

The Bay Lights from Words Pictures Ideas on Vimeo.

The sculpture will be installed and illuminated over the course of the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary. Similar to the ambitious lighting of the Eiffel Tower for its 100th anniversary, The Bay Lights will commemorate the Bay Bridge's 75th Diamond Anniversary at seven times the scale of the famous Parisian landmark. The installation will live for two years, providing a stunning fine arts experience for the entire Bay Area and its visitors. The 25,000 LED’s will stay in place through the opening of the new East Span in 2013.

Learn more about the project, and about how to support it, at and follow this project on facebook.

Thanks, Leo, for all your past support of BRAF and Burning Man, and for your artistic contributions to our culture!

El Radio Fantastique at the ARTumnal Gathering this Saturday

El Radio Fantastique was inspired by a bizarre family tale of a sinister radio that possessed its listeners, bandleader Giovanni DiMorente approaches his music as if turning the dial, transmitting a vibrant spectrum of musical styles, lost in time, yet timeless. This eight-piece ensemble serves up a dizzying cocktail of beautiful darkness and achingly sublime melodies - called everything from junkyard hymns to cabaret grotesque to gypsy soul to New Orleans second line noir. Their tunes are guaranteed to set your soul flying while your heart breaks and your body shakes.

Come join us at the ARTumnal Gathering and enjoy El Radio Fantastique and a fabulous lineup of entertainers.
